Creation

An example of the creation process can be seen in viewing the images below.

I inherited a small section of an art nouveau glass, I was particularly drawn to its elegant deep green top leaves. I removed the old lead, re-leaded it and began the design process.

The idea of a face rising like a bud from between the leaves struck me and utilising some old greenhouse glass, I painted a face that I thought might suit the era of the broken panel

I added in other pieces of discarded glass: bits from an old Victorian lamp, a green from another old panel and began putting it together like a jigsaw puzzled.

It looked very clean, tight curved lines, I liked the tactile effect of the textured glass, but I wanted more . . .

So I did more and here it is!

SPIRIT RISING

Below is another small panel called ‘Margaret Summons the Muse’

Made to celebrate Glasgow 850. It was made using pieces of broken Victorian green glass from discarded panels and sections of float glass from a disused greenhouse. The woman with raised hands is from an old photograph of artist Margaret MacKintosh (one of the Glasgow Four) taken in 1910. Surrounded by Glasgow’s lush ‘Dear Green Place’ she spookily evokes the Muse. The Muse I chose is similar to the faces that Margaret actually painted.
